About St. John's
The accepted date for founding of St. John's Reformed Church is 1780. German Reformed and Lutheran settlers originally met in the area for informal worship and in 1780 built a log meeting house near the site of our present meeting house. The two congregations shared the building until 1839 when the Lutherans formed and built nearby Mt. Tabor.
In 1850, a growing German Reformed congregation built a brick structure to replace the log building. Since then two other brick buildings have been built on the same general site. The present brick meeting house was built in 1979.
Through fellowship, worship, and outreach, we share God's love, not only with each other, but also with those in our community. We visit the sick and shut-in and contribute to many Christian mission projects.
Locally we work to support The Riverheads Weekday Religious Education program, Habitat for Humanity, *SACRA and Kingsway food pantry and local church food pantries. In the summer we hold a Vacation Bible School. Additionally, we do our best to meet other needs and work with other organizations as time allows.
We are seeking ways to expand our national and international presence. Every year we send care packages to those serving our armed forces. Recently we sent support to a short term missionary in the middle east which we hope develops into something long term.
In the past we have supported Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, sponsored community hymn sings, and other musical programs. For Lent, Thanksgiving and other holy days we participate in joint community worship services and studies.
*SACRA - Staunton Area Church Relief Association - provides assistance with utility bills
We gather for worship each Sunday morning at 11 AM
We celebrate The Eucharist (Holy Communion) on the first Sunday of each month. During other times we gather for worship according to the Christian Calendar. Our doors are open to all.
"No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here!"
